Albert Lohnes

Albert Lohnes (1895-1977) was a folk artist from Ragged Harbour, Nova Scotia. He is best known for his decorative knit and crocheted chair coverings. Lohnes went to sea at the age of 13 and learned knitting and knotting in the net lofts. When a ship’s captain complained about sliding off his chair in rough weather, Lohnes created a non-skid chair cover. After retiring in the early 1970s, he continued making these decorative chair coverings, producing 16-20 chairs. His work is held in the collections of the Canadian Museum of History and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
