Edmond Chatigny

Edmond Chatigny (1895-1985) was born in St. Isidore de Beauce, Québec. It was not until he retired from a career as a cattle farmer that he began carving as a way to combat boredom. He never intended to sell his work; he simply wanted to decorate his yard and garden. His sculptures developed a distinctive style where the base often consisted of a larger carving, upon which smaller carvings would be 'piled up' in creative arrangements. Most of his works were naturistic in theme, including subjects such as flowers, birds, and other wildlife. His works were always painted in a palette of only four colours: red, green, brown and white. He rarely signed his work. Chatigny was first published in ‘Les Patenteux du Québec’. His work is sought-after and is featured in many museums and private collections.
