Jan Gerrit Wyers

Jan Gerrit Wyers (1888–1973) was a painter who was born in the Netherlands and later settled in Canada, purchasing land in Windthorst, Saskatchewan. Wyers, initially a farmer, took up painting in 1937-38 during the cold Canadian winters. His first exhibition in 1956 showcased 'The First Saskatchewan Harvest' and 'These Good Old Thrashing Days,' earning him an Award of Merit. In 1959, eight of his works were featured in the National Gallery of Canada's 'Folk Painters of the Canadian West.' Wyers gained national acclaim for his 'naive' folk art style through exhibitions and publications. Affected by Parkinson's disease, he relocated to a nursing home in 1970 and passed away in Regina on July 4, 1973.
