We Sell Your Music Machines

Overview

In present day, where we have access to virtually any song in history with the click of a button, it is hard to imagine where the world of sound miniaturization began. The music box was the first step in the centuries-long process of shrinking and ‘portabilizing’ sound. The key to the music boxes’ portability was a tuned steel comb which was invented in 1796 by Antoine Favre in Switzerland. The comb was made of varying lengths of metal arranged in a curved shape in which a rotating cylinder would strike to produce notes. In the years following, iterations were created by notable figures such as David LeCoultre and Francois Nicole, but it wasn’t until 1875 when the Paillard company opened the first music box factory in St. Croix, Switzerland. Early music boxes were an expensive, luxury item favoured by aristocrats, but over the years became a more common form of music enjoyment.
