Wilfrid Richard

Born in Saint-Ubalde, Portneuf, Québec, sculptor Wilfrid Richard (1894-1996) specialized in sculptures of animals and people, usually in the form of relief carvings. His father, sculptor Damase Richard, shared his hobby with Wilfrid but claimed it was simply a way to 'kill time' - a common phrase used by folk artists at the time to undermine their talent. Wilfrid carved with great charm and intricate detail, paying little mind to accreditation, often leaving his works unmarked or loosely intialled with pencil. Although Damase was the patriarch of the Richard family, Wilfrid led the dynasty of sculptors with three of his six children honing the craft. Unlike many folk artists, Wilfrid was recognized for his talents during his lifetime. His works are considered to be among the finest examples of animal folk art sculptures and can be found in museums and private collections across North America.
